Scomber scombrus

HABITAT
Epipelagic shoals down to about 200 m; inshore near the surface in spring and summer.
SIZE
typically 30 cm (12 in), up to 60 cm
IDENTIFY
Atlantic mackerel have an iridescent blue-green back, silvery underside, spindle-shaped body, and about 20–30 wavy black bars across the upper body with a dark streak below.
LOOK-ALIKES
Compare the wavy-bar pattern, narrow dark streak, and fin profile; the distinctive coloring fades quickly after death, so a fresh observation is more useful than color memory alone.
WHERE
Atlantic mackerel are common in cold and temperate waters over the continental shelf. They swim in schools near the surface, and travel to and from spawning and summering grounds. In the western Atlantic they range from Labrador to North Carolina.
WHEN
The western Atlantic has southern spawning in April–May and northern spawning in June–July; timing is not a catch guarantee.
TECHNIQUE
Atlantic mackerel school near the surface and support Mid-Atlantic and New England recreational fisheries open all year. Match presentation to the observed depth and check the current possession limit and permit requirements before retaining fish.
HANDLE
NOAA recommends minimizing handling, wet hands, brief air exposure, and avoiding the eyes and gills. Dehook in the water when possible and support the body if lifted.
CONSERVATION
NOAA's 2025 assessment describes Atlantic mackerel as not overfished but still rebuilding to its target level and not subject to overfishing. The profile also describes annual catch and monitoring measures.
