Pomatomus saltatrix

HABITAT
Pelagic waters of continental shelves; schools feed inshore in bays, estuaries, and surf zones.

adults 30–60 cm (12–24 in), max 130 cm
IDENTIFY
Bluefish are blue-green on the back and silvery on the sides and belly, with a prominent jaw and sharp, compressed teeth. Use those marks together rather than a single color cue.
LOOK-ALIKES
Confirm the blue-green back, silver sides, and conspicuous toothed jaw together before treating an identification as confirmed.
WHERE
Adults live in both inshore and offshore areas and gather by size in schools; juveniles move to estuarine and nearshore shelf habitats and prefer sandy ocean bottoms.
WHEN
Bluefish generally move north in spring and summer as water warms, then south in autumn and winter. NOAA also describes spawning in spring and summer; movement timing is not a promise of local availability.
TECHNIQUE
NOAA describes recreational hook-and-line harvest and surface-feeding school behavior. Choose tackle that accounts for the species' sharp teeth and verify any gear restrictions before fishing.
HANDLE
NOAA recommends minimizing handling, using wet hands, avoiding the eyes and gills, and keeping air exposure brief when a fish is lifted. Use release tools and do not gaff a fish intended for release.
CONSERVATION
NOAA's 2025 assessment describes bluefish as not overfished, rebuilding toward the target level, and not subject to overfishing. Annual limits and rebuilding measures can change.
