Stenotomus chrysops
speciesREVIEWEDA sparid occurring primarily in the Atlantic from Massachusetts to South Carolina, commonly known as porgy along with many other family members. Migrates inshore as temperatures warm in spring.
HABITAT
Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to South Carolina; inshore waters and estuarine areas.
SIZE
up to 18 in and 3–4 lb; average 0.5–1 lb
IDENTIFY
Scup are deep-bodied, dusky brown to silvery, with spiny fins and narrow front teeth. Adult fins can be mottled dark brown; compare all of these marks together.
LOOK-ALIKES
Longspine porgy resembles scup but has elongated dorsal spines. Compare the dorsal-fin spines and full body before treating a porgy identification as confirmed.
WHERE
Scup use rocky ledges, reefs, mussel beds, sand, mud, shell, and eelgrass across life stages. Juveniles and adults use estuaries and structured habitat in warmer months and move offshore in winter.
WHEN
Scup move north and inshore to spawn in spring, then south and offshore as water cools in autumn, reaching offshore winter areas by December. Timing describes a population pattern, not a catch guarantee.
TECHNIQUE
Scup browse invertebrates on the bottom, and NOAA lists handlines and rod-and-reel among fishery gear. Match bait or lure depth to current conditions and check the applicable gear rule.
HANDLE
NOAA recommends minimizing handling, wetting hands, avoiding eyes and gills, and limiting air exposure. Dehook in the water when possible and support the body if the fish must be lifted.
CONSERVATION
NOAA reports the Atlantic coast scup stock as not overfished and not subject to overfishing in the 2025 assessment, while the South Atlantic porgy complex is unassessed in that profile. Stock units matter.
