Cynoscion
genusREVIEWEDCynoscion is a genus of weakfishes in the family Sciaenidae, the drums and croakers, found off the Americas in the western Atlantic and eastern Pacific in tropical and warm-temperate waters.
HABITAT
Coastal tropical and warm-temperate waters off North and South America.

IDENTIFY
Weakfish (Cynoscion regalis) occur along the Atlantic coast of North America from Nova Scotia to southeastern Florida, but are more common from New York to North Carolina.
LOOK-ALIKES
Weakfish are Cynoscion regalis; spotted seatrout are Cynoscion nebulosus. Use the scientific name when distinguishing them.
WHERE
Weakfish use coastal sounds, bays, and estuaries in warmer months, with adults moving offshore and south for winter. Adults are often associated with the edges of eelgrass beds and nearby prey habitat.
WHEN
Spring warming prompts inshore and northward movement; spawning peaks from April through June, followed by an offshore and southward fall movement. Local timing varies.
TECHNIQUE
ASMFC describes adult weakfish feeding primarily on shrimp, other crustaceans, and small fish. A bait or lure that matches that prey profile is a starting category, not a location or success recommendation.
HANDLE
NOAA recommends wet hands, limited air exposure, minimal handling, avoiding eyes and gills, and dehooking in the water when possible. Handle every release as an individual fish, not a guaranteed outcome.
CONSERVATION
ASMFC identifies weakfish as depleted and says overfishing is not occurring in its current species information; high natural mortality has complicated recovery. Assessment status can change.
